Ingredients

For the patties

  • 1 lb (about 500 g) ground beef
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 tbsp breadcrumbs
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and black pepper

For the onion gravy

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp flour
  • 1 ¾ cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (such as Gruyère or Mozzarella)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix the ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Form the mixture into 4 oval patties.
  2. Heat a skillet over medium heat and cook the patties until browned on both sides. Remove from the pan and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, melt the butter and add the sliced onions. Cook slowly until the onions become soft and caramelized.
  4. Stir in the flour and cook for about 1 minute. Gradually add the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring until the gravy thickens.
  5. Return the patties to the skillet and simmer in the onion gravy for about 10 minutes.
  6. Sprinkle shredded cheese over the patties, cover the pan, and let the cheese melt.
